The calculation involves determining the design area (usually 3,000 sq ft for sprinkler systems) and applying the density/area method. For an office building, you might need 0.1 gpm/sq ft over 3,000 sq ft = 300 gpm minimum flow rate, plus hose stream allowance of 250 gpm, for a total of 550 gpm at 40 psi residual pressure.
